Northeast to the Keys car carrier route

Northeast Snowbird Route: Keys Handoffs for Brokers and Carriers

Every fall, cars, trucks, and SUVs start rolling south from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and the rest of the Northeast. Every spring, they head back north. For the full New York to Key West route, see the lane overview. For brokers and carriers working the Northeast snowbird route, the long haul down I-95 is the familiar part. The last hundred-plus miles into the Florida Keys is where loads stall, customers get sent to Homestead, and trucks deadhead. In-N-Out Keys LLC runs that Keys leg door to door, so the whole route works from the customer’s driveway up north to their driveway in the Keys.

The Northeast Snowbird Route, Season by Season

Fall: southbound

Snowbirds want their vehicles waiting when they arrive for the winter. That means a wave of southbound loads in the fall, with many customers hoping for pickup on a specific week and delivery right after they land. Northeast pickups are usually straightforward. The pressure comes at the bottom of the map.

Spring: northbound

When the season ends, the same customers want their vehicles back home. Northbound loads start at Keys addresses, which means a carrier has to get down the Overseas Highway to pick them up, or the customer has to drive to the mainland to meet the truck. Spring is where a Keys partner saves the most hassle, because the hard part is the very first mile.

Where Northeast-to-Keys Loads Get Stuck

  • The Overseas Highway: U.S. 1 is the only road through the Keys, with long two-lane stretches, dozens of bridges, and few places for a full-size car hauler to turn around.
  • Tight island streets: parts of Key West and many residential canal streets in the Keys aren’t built for a long rig.
  • Deadhead: a carrier who doesn’t run the Keys may face a long empty run back to the mainland after one drop.
  • The Homestead workaround: to make the load work, customers get asked to meet the truck in Homestead or Florida City, often after they thought they booked door to door.

We covered the broker side of this in Brokers: Skip the Homestead Meetup for Keys Customers, and the carrier side in Carriers: Skip the Homestead Meetup and the Keys Deadhead.

Oversized Vehicles Are the Peak-Season Puzzle

Snowbirds don’t only ship sedans. Plenty of Northeast customers bring pickups, and a 3/4-ton crew cab truck can take up about 1.5 spots on a carrier. In peak season, when trailers are filling up fast, those vehicles are harder to place and can sit longer on the board. If you’re quoting a big truck on the snowbird route, it helps to set expectations early about timing and flexibility, and to know who can handle the Keys end once it reaches South Florida.

How In-N-Out Keys Fits Into a Northeast Route

For brokers

Book the long haul with your usual Northeast carrier, and hand the Keys final-mile leg to us. Your customer gets delivery at their Keys address instead of a mainland meetup. In spring, we can pick up at the Keys address and bring the vehicle to a mainland point for the northbound carrier.

For carriers

Run your I-95 load as planned and drop the Keys unit at an agreed mainland point. We take it the rest of the way, Key Largo to Key West, and you stay on your route instead of spending a day on the Overseas Highway. Northbound, we can stage Keys pickups on the mainland so you can load and go.

What we bring

  • Door-to-door in the Keys: every address from Key Largo to Key West, both directions.
  • Local know-how: when a street is too tight for a truck, we arrange a nearby spot ahead of time.
  • Clean paperwork: BOLs and invoices through Super Dispatch.
  • Verified authority: USDOT 4120018 and MC 1583555. In-N-Out Keys LLC is a veteran-owned interstate carrier and broker, and owner Steve Janowski is a U.S. Army veteran.

Plan Ahead of the Rush

The best time to line up a Keys partner is before the fall and spring waves hit. Reach out with your expected Northeast volume, any oversized units, and typical timing, and we’ll talk through how to cover the Keys leg so you can quote door to door with confidence.
