Deer country
Big Pine is where the National Key Deer Refuge is, and the speed limits through it are enforced seriously — 45 by day and 35 at night on US-1, lower on the side roads. Those limits exist because the deer are the size of a large dog and they step out without looking.
It means a run through Big Pine takes longer than the mileage suggests, and any carrier who quotes you as though it does not is telling you they have not driven it. We have, constantly, and we schedule for it.
Getting a truck down the side streets
Off US-1 the island opens into a grid of quiet residential streets, and a lot of them are narrow with soft shoulders and low canopy. Eden Pines, Port Pine Heights, Doctors Arm, Pine Channel Estates — all fine, but worth a conversation before the day rather than a surprise at the turn.
If your street cannot take a full-size transport truck we will tell you when we quote and arrange somewhere sensible nearby. What we will not do is let the driver discover it with your car already on the trailer.
No Name Key and the rest
We cover No Name Key, Little Torch, Middle Torch, Ramrod, Summerland, Cudjoe and Sugarloaf as part of the same run. If it is between roughly MM 20 and MM 35 it is the same trip for us.
No Name is worth flagging when you book, because the bridge and the access are their own thing and it is better handled in advance.
Bahia Honda and the bridge
Just north of Big Pine the road crosses Bahia Honda and then the Seven Mile Bridge. That is the stretch that makes a Keys move different from a mainland one, and in high wind it is the first place a high-sided load becomes a problem. Another reason the quote comes with a date range rather than a promise.
