PCS orders to Key West?
We move vehicles in and out of NAS Key West regularly. Here’s how the Keys leg actually works, and what we can and can’t do ourselves.
Who moves what
Worth being blunt about this, because most PCS moves cross state lines and most companies are vague on it.
The Florida leg is ours. Our truck, our driver, from wherever the vehicle enters the state down to your address in the Keys.
The long leg is not. If your vehicle is coming from Norfolk, San Diego or anywhere else outside Florida, a partner carrier runs that portion. We tell you which carrier before you book, we stay your point of contact throughout, and we handle the part that the mainland companies get wrong — the last hundred miles.
That last part is not a small detail. The most common PCS complaint we hear is a driver calling from Homestead asking the family to come collect their own car. That does not happen with us.
Delivering to NAS Key West
Housing areas on Key West island take normal door delivery — we come to the address.
The airfield installation is different. We meet you off base rather than bringing a transport truck through the gate. The usual spot is the old Sears centre on North Roosevelt Boulevard, which is easy to find, has room to unload, and is a short drive from the base. We will agree the meeting point with you before the day, not on it.
Timing around orders
PCS timing is rarely tidy. Report dates move, household goods and vehicles arrive on different schedules, and you may be in temporary lodging when the car lands.
Tell us the report date and the earliest the vehicle can be released, and we will work backwards. If you need it held a few days at the other end because you have not got keys to a house yet, say so at the quote — that is a planning problem, not a crisis, as long as we know.
What to have ready
Year, make and model. Both addresses, or the base and the unit if you do not have a house yet. Your report date. Whether the vehicle runs. And a phone number that will still work after you move, which sounds obvious and catches people out constantly.
Empty the vehicle. Personal items are not covered under transport insurance, and a car full of boxes is heavier than a car.
Common questions
Do you deliver onto the base?
To housing areas on the island, yes. For the airfield installation we meet you off base — usually the old Sears centre on North Roosevelt Boulevard — and we agree that with you in advance.
My car is coming from out of state. Are you moving it the whole way?
No, and we will not tell you otherwise. A partner carrier runs the leg outside Florida and we run the Florida portion. You will know who has your vehicle at each stage.
Can you hold the car if my housing isn’t ready?
Tell us when you book and we will plan around it. Sprung on us at delivery it is a much harder problem.
What about enclosed transport?
Available through the partner network rather than on our own equipment. For most vehicles open transport is what new cars ship to dealerships on and is the sensible choice.
How far ahead should I book?
As soon as you have a report date. Summer PCS season tightens every lane into Florida, and the Keys leg is the one with the least slack in it.
Who hauls what, and where
In-N-Out Keys, LLC (USDOT 4120018), doing business as Florida Keys Auto Transport, is a veteran-owned Florida motor carrier holding Florida intrastate operating authority. We carry vehicles on our own truck within the state of Florida only.
Any move that begins or ends outside Florida is carried by a separate licensed and insured motor carrier we work with. In-N-Out Keys does not perform the interstate portion of those moves. We tell you which carrier is handling that leg before you book, and we stay your point of contact throughout.
