The days are getting shorter up north, and the calls are picking up down here. Snowbird season has started. Every fall, cars, trucks and SUVs head south toward Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine, Summerland and Key West for the winter. If you’re planning to ship your vehicle down instead of driving it, one question matters more than most people realize: will the car actually come to your door?
For a lot of Keys customers, the honest answer from many shipping companies is no. At In-N-Out Keys, the answer is yes.
The Homestead Meetup Problem
Here’s something many first-time snowbirds don’t hear until after they book. Many brokers sell a “door-to-door” quote to the Florida Keys, and then a few days before delivery the customer gets a call: “The driver can’t go into the Keys. Can you meet him in Homestead?”
It happens because many long-haul carriers don’t want to take a big rig down the Overseas Highway. It’s a long, two-lane road with bridges, tight turns and limited spots to park and unload a full carrier. So the car gets dropped on the mainland, and the customer is left to sort out the rest.
For someone who’s already in the Keys, that can mean:
- A drive of an hour or more each way up U.S. 1, often more from Key West
- Finding a ride to Homestead, Florida City or a truck stop parking lot
- Waiting around for a driver whose ETA keeps slipping
- Inspecting your car in a parking lot instead of your own driveway
That isn’t door-to-door. It’s door-to-somewhere-close.
How In-N-Out Keys Does It Differently
We’re an interstate carrier and broker built around the Florida Keys. We know the long-haul carriers that run the snowbird routes, and as a direct carrier for all of Florida, we handle the Keys leg ourselves. Your vehicle is brought all the way down U.S. 1 and delivered to your home, rental, marina or condo, wherever in the Keys you’re staying.
We serve the entire Florida Keys, from Key Largo to Key West. There’s no Homestead handoff for you to arrange and no parking-lot inspection. When the car is handed over, it’s handed over where you are.
Because the Keys leg is what we do every day, we can also help with the details that trip up out-of-town companies:
- Gated communities and condos: we coordinate access ahead of time.
- Narrow streets and tight driveways: we know where a truck can and can’t safely unload, and we plan around it.
- Mile marker addresses: we know the Keys by mile marker, so your delivery spot is clear before the truck rolls.
- On-site contacts: if you’re arriving after the car, we can work with a neighbor, property manager or family member you name.
Planning Your Snowbird Shipment
Fall and early winter is the busiest stretch of the year on routes into South Florida. A little planning goes a long way:
1. Book early
Carrier space on popular snowbird lanes fills up as the season gets going. Reaching out a few weeks ahead gives us the most options to match your vehicle with a reliable carrier on your route.
2. Give us a pickup window
A flexible pickup window of a few days usually makes it easier to line up the right carrier. If you need a specific date, tell us up front and we’ll let you know what’s realistic.
3. Choose open or enclosed
Open transport works well for most daily drivers. If you have a classic, a lowered car, fresh paint or a high-value vehicle, enclosed transport adds protection from weather and road debris. Not sure which fits? Ask us and we’ll walk you through it.
4. Prep the vehicle
- Wash the car so pre-existing marks are easy to spot during inspection.
- Take your own dated photos of every side.
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.
- Remove valuables and loose items, and ask before packing anything in the trunk.
- Let us know about any mechanical issues, low clearance or aftermarket parts.
5. Share your Keys delivery details
Give us the full delivery address, including mile marker if you have it, plus gate codes or access instructions and the name and phone number of whoever will meet the driver. The more we know, the smoother the drop-off.
Simple Payment: Cash on Delivery
We ask for payment on delivery (COD) whenever possible. Every carrier accepts COD, but not every carrier takes billed payments, so paying on delivery lets us line up the best carrier for your route. For deliveries into the Keys, that means you pay when your vehicle arrives. If you’re shipping out of the Keys, a separate transporter is often needed for part of the trip, so payment may be split, and we’re happy to work out an arrangement that fits you.
Veteran-Owned and Fully Authorized
In-N-Out Keys is a veteran-owned business. Our owner, Steve Janowski, is a U.S. Army veteran, and we bring the same straightforward approach to every shipment: tell people the truth, show up when we say we will, and finish the job.
We operate under USDOT 4120018 and MC 1583555. You’re welcome to look us up on the FMCSA website before you book.
